Pediatric Eye Diseases

Early diagnosis is very important in maintaining healthy eyes for your child. For this reason we recommend regular eye exams at the age of first month , first year and between 3 and 5 years. These exams are very important. If these exams are neglected the child may have permanent eye damage which can effect both his/her school performance and whole life.

Many eye pathologies that we often see in adults can also be seen in children. The most common ones of these are:

  • Refractive errors(nearsightedness,farsightedness and astigmatism)
  • Lazy eye(ambliopia)
  • Glaucoma
  • Cataracts
  • Blocked tear duct
  • Nystagmus
  • Ptosis
  • Genetic malformations,
  • Retinopathy of prematurity .

If you notice squint(crossed eyes) , watering ,head posture , dischange, nystagmus , white colour in the pupilla or looking from close distance to objects, the child should be examined as early as possible.

The eye examination includes different visual acuity tests according to age to understand the level of vision ,retinoscopy and pediatric autorefractometer measurement to detect refractive errors, slit-lamp examination for anterior segment and binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy to examine the retina and optic disc.

In cases of refractive errors ,squint or lazy eye , we recommend corrective lenses(glasses) and eye paching . More serious conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma or retinopathy of prematurity , a medical or surgical treatment may be required.
